Deen Underwood was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but lived since the age of five, in El Paso . Her father was an attorney for the El Paso Natural Gas Company. She and her husband, Hamilton, live in in El Paso. Deen is the mother of two sons, Paul and John and has four grandchildren; Bryce, Ty James, Olivia and Aliva Duchouquette.
Deen has a B.S. in Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Masters
Degree in Computers in Education from Lesley College, Cambridge Mass. She received her
Doctor of Arts in History From Canterbury University, Canterbury England. She has studied
writing, alt history, painting and drawing at the American Academy in Paris, France. Deen taught
in the Elderhostel program at El Paso Community College and has been a guest instructor at the
University of Phoenix at Santa Teresa, NM. She taught computer literacy, English and Texas
History at Eastwood Middle School and retired from the Ysleta Ind. School District after 35
years.
Deen has won numerous awards for her writing in the categories of stories, articles, plays
and poetry from the El Paso Writers' League and The El Paso Manuscript Club annual contests.
She has won first place awards in the Leon Denny Moses Contest" El Paso. Writers' League
locally and the Poetry Society of Texas. Deen has earned the Golden Poet Award from the
American Poetry Association and is a successful grant writer. She is a member of Southwestern
Writers, Mesilla Valley Writers, Women Writing the West, Texas Folklore Society and the
National Author's Registry. Deen has been published in numerous magazines, yearbooks,
newspapers and newsletters. Many of her poems were published in"Animal Tales".
She was selected as the 1997-98 Outstanding Seventh Grade Texas History Teacher in
El Paso by the Paso del Norte chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and is listed in -
"Who's Who in America". She collects postcards of old E1 Paso and the Southwest, goes on digs
with the El Paso Prospectors, paints, writes and participates in historical presentations.
Deen enjoys writing about western themes, which expand the landscapes of the mind,moving the writer and the reader into wider vistas; She feel That a book takes on new life every
time a reader brings his own experience to it, enabling the-reader to discover new ways to
observe the world around him, increasing awareness.
She has published her own volume of westem poetry,Remembrance". Her
article on "Shopping inThe Southwest" was featured in the 1996, 1997 and 1998, 2003-4
issues of "GuestJife" with an additional article on..southwestem cuisine, "Savor the
Flavor". She is a featured writer as a historyColumnist in The Southwest Trader newspaper.

Her article, "Susan McSween Barber, Cattle Queen of New Mexico" was
published in the El Paso County Historical Society's spring 1996 quarterly, "Password".
Deen has written a pictorial biography, "leon Metz, Southwestern legendary Historian"
which has received favorable reviews. She is one of four authors of "Mission Trail", a
commemorative limited edition. In it, Deen wrote A bout the Ysleta mission, leon Metz
about the Socorro mission, SheldonHall about the.Guadalupe mission in Juarez and
John O. West about the Chapel at San ElHizario.
She published historical Cemetery, a Walking Tour" containing
information over 50 outstanding people who are buried there. She narrates a visual
presentation of Concordia Cemetery for civic organizations. She has done research for
historian Leon Metz and is one of the people to whom his book "John Wesley Hardin,
Dark Angel of Texas" is dedicated. Her interview wtth Tom lea is in the book, "Cisneros,
2000",Highlighting Jose Cisneros1 portraits of the borderlands.

Dean is been nominated to the El Paso women's Hall of Fame. She has taken part in the preservation of historical landmarks. And serves on the board of the El Paso County historical commission and the women's Department of greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce.
She placed second in the Texas competition as outstanding seventh grade Texas history teacher of the year, sponsored by the daughters of the Republic it Texas. Deen has been highlighted in El Paso times as featured teacher in October 1999. She is currently serving as secretary of El Paso County, geological Society, treasurer the El Paso County historical commission and research chair for Concordia heritage Association. She serves on the Texas State Board of management as West Texas representative district 1 for the daughters of the Republic it Texas, 2002 at 2004. Her teaching experience of 35 years ranges grade level second through eighth and include running a computer lab writing center teaching English and Texas history.She has taught numerous adult computer classes as well as portraits, seminars, has taught at Fort bliss, featured at book signings, the University of Phoenix. El Paso community college, the El Paso Public Library, Memorial Park library, Westside library and Brannigan library and Las Cruces, New Mexico. She has given reviews of her books and slideshows of concordia for the El Paso woman's club, the daughters of the Republic it Texas the daughters of the American Revolution Rotary club, antique auto club, El Paso genealogical society and other groups. She has appeared on mature living and along the Rio Grande on television. At KR0D and KTSM radio. She is featured in a video, El Paso goal about El Paso's history. She helped the survey every Cemetery in El Paso County for the state and research them , wrote the Texas historical markers for Capt. James White in the Masonic section of concordia Cemetery. Deen's interest in the history of the Southwest, especially the history of El Paso , enables her to frequently speak to Civic groups and students. Deen has given tours of the missions , Concordia Cemetery, old Evergreen Cemetery and historical downtown El Paso. She is qualified to speak on the subject of El Paso history, writing poetry , art, if requested to give a visual presentation of Concordia Cemetery. Deen Has got 5 cemetery in El Paso and the county dedicated Texas historical cemetery.

I am so sorry to hear of Rosemary's passing. I saw her at the reunion and talk to her, not knowing that that would be the last time I'd ever see her. My love and sympathy goes out to her daughter and her family. She was a good friend for the four years I spent at Irvin. Martha Deen Underwood.
